Log books [manuscript]. 1849-1851.

Log of the proceedings of Her Majesty's surveying ship "Rattlesnake", captained by Owen Stanley; log kept by James Thomas Stanton, midshipman, commencing Wednesday, May 2nd 1849 and ending Wednesday, March 13th 1850. The log was compiled during a survey of the Eastern coast of Australia, from Port Jackson to Cape York and the Southearn coast of New Guinea. Captain Stanley died on board at Port Jackson, March 13, 1851. This log book is bound with Log of the proceedings of Her Majesty's ship "Fisgard", Commodore Henry Eden, kept by James Thomas Stanton, midshipman, commencing Tuesday Nov. 12th 1850 and ending Tuesday Jan. 5th 1851.

Owen Stanley, 1811-1850, was marine surveyor of the first rank who worked in Australian water from 1847-1850 in command of "H.M.S.
